How to Throw a Split Fingered Fastball

| |

Steps
Hold the ball like a two seam fastball, with your index and middle finger along the top of the ball. Rotate the ball towards yourself, so your fingers are along the horseshoe seam. Spread your fingers to the outsides of the seams, and have your thumb directly under the ball.

Throw the ball like you would a normal two-seam fastball, snapping your wrist downwards as you release it. Or you can also follow through like a four seamer.

Tips
Not everyone can throw this pitch, it is much easier if you have large hands.
Throw this pitch low so that when a batter swings, it drops off the table and they swing over it.
Before throwing in a game, practice this grip to stretch out your fingers which will make the pitch game ready and easier to throw in a game situation.
The farther apart your fingers, the more the pitch will sink, but you will lose some control.

Warnings
As with any pitch, excessive throwing can damage your arm, if it is sore, stop throwing and ice it.
Because of the stress stretching your fingers around the ball places on the ligaments of the arm, it can cause elbow pain.
Children under the age of 13 should not throw breaking balls. It can permanently hurt your arm, since it is not fully developed.
