Pitch Count for Pitchers

| |

Coaches in the youth leagues either in house or select should be putting their players on a pitch count the whole season. It doesn’t matter how good they, how strong they are, they should be groomed slowly and build up strength to throw more pitches.
Remember its not about the wins but getting the kids better so they can go to the next level.
The coach’s should use a tally counter and as the players reach the pitch count pull them out no matter the score or game situation because maybe one more pitch could become an injury.
For the first few outings I have the players throw a basic bullpen which consist of about 30-40 pitches and only fastballs and change ups. After a few outings depending on the age we start to introduce a curve ball and start to build up to their stamina by doing a lot of running and stomach exercises. The legs and the midsection are very important to lasting longer in games.
As the baseball season goes along the bullpens stay the same at around 30-40 but during the games we have the pitchers go up 20-30 more pitches every 3rd outing or until they feel comfortable. Now that doesn’t mean they will always throw that many. It can change from game to game but their stamina will get better and better. They should be lasting into the 5th or 6th inning a lot easier as they throw more and more.
Every coach should have a tally counter of some kind and keep the players in mind when it comes winning a game or their future.
